EVERY DOG WILL BE FAMOUS FOR 15 MINUTES

Dogs are very unique creatures. They are intelligent (ok maybe some more than others), they are loyal, they are cute, they are funny, they are brave, but more than anything, they are our best friends.

The Internet is crowded of stories about dogs that did something amazing, absurd, unique, inspiring, courageous or funny. They are the ones that made their way up to stardom becoming celebrity dogs.

Everyone probably knows Laika, the iconic Soviet space dog who was the first living being to be sent to space but never made its way back.

Some dogs made their fame out of legendary faithfulness to their owners. Hachikō, a golden brown Akita dog waited for his owner for nine years at a train station after his owner’s death.

Other dogs are renowned for they intelligence. In 2009, Betsy, an Austrian border Collie, made it to the National Geographic cover as the most intelligent dog in the world. Her vocabulary has a range of 340 words.

Following a different path, other dogs made their way to stardom through winning competitions such as the “World’s Ugliest Dog Contest”. Elwood, after winning the competition in 2007, became a worldwide ambassador for homeless animals and those with special needs.

Coming closer to our days of digital interaction and user generated content, at some point, every dog’s owner (me included) had his mind crossed with the idea of making his dog become an internet celebrity.YouTube currently has 32 millions videos of dogs engaged in some sort of cool, funny, unusual activity. In such a competitive environment, very few succeed. Let’s mention a couple.

Boo, with his 7 millions fans on Facebook and a published book, is considered as the most famous dog on the Internet. Why? Because of its cuteness. Yes, it’s a fact.

Mishka, the talking Husky. Mishka has over 100 million video views and she has been invited on numerous TV shows.

Last but not least Jesse, an impressively house duties trained Jack Russell who has appeared in many television commercials and movies. Watch Jesse performing some house duties here

But what about the remaining 99.9% of the canine population? Those dogs that conduct ordinary lives? They do not possess particular skills, do not dress in ridiculous outfits, didn’t save anyone’s life, do not have sense of fashion and, most likely, they only know two or three basic tricks and they will never become YouTube celebrities. However, they still make the lives of their owners full of happiness and, under their eyes, they are the most amazing and special dogs in the entire world. They do deserve their slice of fame.

This is why this blog came to life. In each post, I will feature an ordinary dog during its daily “normal dog” routine. Regular dogs deserve a chance to show to the world how unique and special they can be in their “normality”. At least for the people they share their lives with.
